Built-in Guards
Which guards apply depends on who holds the key. In hosted mode the server enforces every guard below by default, no configuration required. In local mode nothing sits between your process and the chain, so server-side limits and pause cannot see or stop a locally signed transaction. Your protection there is the per-transaction caps you set yourself: AGENTWALLET_MAX_TX_NATIVE, AGENTWALLET_MAX_TX_TOKEN, AGENTWALLET_MAX_TX_SOL and AGENTWALLET_MAX_AUTOPAY. Set them before you fund the wallet.
Hosted keys are encrypted before storage and never leave the server. In local mode there is nothing to store, because the key stays on your machine.

Hosted mode. Set a per-wallet daily spending cap in USD. Enforced by the server on every transaction.
Hosted mode. Transactions blocked when gas prices spike above safe thresholds. Prevents overpaying during network congestion.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as one operation?
Each API call that modifies state counts as one operation: creating a wallet, signing a transaction, sending a transaction, approving a token, wrapping/unwrapping tokens, or reading a smart contract. Checking balances, listing wallets, and viewing usage stats are free and do not count.
What's the difference between EVM and Solana wallets?
EVM wallets work on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and all EVM-compatible chains using the same address. Solana wallets use a different key format and work on Solana mainnet and devnet. You can create both types and use them side by side. EVM wallets support ERC-20 tokens, approvals, and contract calls. Solana wallets support SPL token transfers.
What happens when my agent wants to spend more than its cap?
On a hosted wallet it asks you. AgentWallet emails you an approve link and a deny link, the agent waits, and once you approve it makes that one payment. An approval is bound to one wallet, chain, token, recipient and maximum, expires in 24 hours, and is used exactly once. Turn it off with AGENTWALLET_APPROVALS=0 and the agent is refused instead. Local wallets have no approval channel: the caps in your environment are the policy.
Does AgentWallet check what a token is before approving it?
Yes. check_token_risk, and every approve_token result, reports honeypot, buy and sell tax, owner powers, verified source, holder concentration and DEX liquidity from GoPlus Security, with an on-chain fallback. It is a warning for your agent to weigh, never a block.
What is x402 and how do paywalls work?
x402 is an open standard for agent-to-agent payments. When an Ai agent hits a URL that returns HTTP 402, it signs a payment authorization for exactly the amount asked, retries with it in the payment header, and the server's facilitator settles it on-chain. AgentWallet speaks both x402 v1 and v2 and works with any standard x402 server. You can create paywalls to charge other agents for your APIs, data, or content, payments are verified on-chain with replay protection. Your agent can also pay x402 invoices from other services automatically.
Are these custodial wallets?
That is your choice. Set one environment variable and AgentWallet signs in your own process with a key you supply: self-custody, no account required, nothing to freeze. You can verify it by pointing the API at a closed port and watching transactions still work.
Hosted wallets exist because Ai agents have no secure storage of their own, no browser extension and no hardware wallet, so we generate, encrypt and manage the key server-side and your agent just signs. Those are custodial, and we say so plainly. You can export any hosted key from your dashboard at any time and take it elsewhere. Custody here is a convenience, never a trap.
Is there a REST API?
Yes. Every feature available through the MCP server is also available via a standard REST API. Use the MCP server for Ai assistants (Claude, Cursor, etc.) and the REST API for direct integrations, scripts, or custom applications. Both use the same API key.
